5 Hawaii Surf Spots You Have To See To Believe!

hanalei beachHawaii is more than tropical beaches and little drinks with umbrellas; it’s all about the sport of surfing. Whether you’re new to the board or have been surfing for decades, the 50th state of the union has the perfect wave for you. Here are five Hawaii surf spots you have to see to believe!

Oahu

Ehukai Beach Park: if you’re not quite a beginner, but haven’t yet reached expert level, this is the beach for you. A sandy bottom scattered with rock virtually ensures a clean wipe out and the shifting peaks offer a decent challenge. Because the peaks shift so frequently, you may surf a wave from the west Saturday and one wrapping from the east on Sunday; no two rides are ever the same.

Sunset Beach: don’t take this wave for less than it is: a powerful, hollow wave from deep waters. While it may look like a short wave, it’s not for the unskilled. The inside bowl is amazing and provides a heavy barrel. Getting inside the wave can be tough so make sure you’ve got your paddling arms on. Be sure to be aware of your surroundings and remember all safety precautions.

Maui

Hookipa: not only can you board surf here at Hookipa, but you can windsurf as well. The various peaks make this one of the hottest spots for water sports on the island. Surfers of all ability levels can be found in the surf throughout the day so get ready to mingle with the locals. If you’re an advanced surfer, you’ll want to head to the Pavillions for a proper challenge; otherwise, any spot you choose is just fine.

Honolua: this beach is typically crowded, however, any waves you catch on this point make it well worth the hassle. Because the spot is a bit sheltered, swell windows aren’t as large as can be found elsewhere and waves are infrequent in comparison. Don’t let that steer you towards other shores! When you catch a wave, the cave makes it feel as though you are one with nature, even if it’s only for a few minutes.

Kauai

Windsurfing at Hookipa Today.Hanalei: if you’re looking to keep your surfing a bit more social, this is the spot for you. Locals flock to the area for its clear bay and beautiful town. While it may not be the stuff legends are made of, the small surf is actually favored among the enthusiasts that frequent the beach. Head to Hanalei if you are looking for a casual day of sun and surf with a great group of friends.

If you conduct a web search to find the best waves in Hawaii, you may be surprised at how little information you find. Hawaiians are incredibly respectful of their land and sea and don’t advertise intensively. It doesn’t mean these beaches aren’t open to the public, it simply means that you need to find someone in the know to give you guidance.

If you’re looking for a reason to head to Hawaii, you’ve found it! With amazingly pristine beaches, glorious swells and small waves, every water sports aficionado in your group will find the perfect ride on these islands. Do a web search, decide on your island and look for great beaches! You’ll not find better surfing domestically.
