7 Tips for Traveling With Toddlers
Traveling with toddlers can be a very difficult experience if you don’t plan ahead of time. Even though traveling by plane can make the trip shorter, that doesn’t mean it will make it any easier for the child. Young children tend to bore very easily, especially in situations where they do not have freedom of movement such as on an airplane. The following tips will help make your trip much more comfortable for you and the child.
Check Equipment You Need for the Baby
Most airlines will allow travelers to check baby seats at no additional cost. You can use the baby’s stroller as you traveler through the airport, and when you are ready to board the plane, you can check it at the gate.
Learn to Pack Lightly
Traveling with a toddler can create an enormous amount of stress when you are trying to travel with the child and luggage. You want to learn to compact things you need into as small a space as possible and learn to pack enough for a two day trip instead of traveling for two days and packing for five, a mistake many people tend to make.
Limit the Number of Carry On Bags
While this may not be of great importance if you are traveling by car, when you need to fly to your destination you need to allow for the possibility that you may need to carry the child, a diaper bag and your own bag. When children get tired or bored, they do not want to walk, so you need to plan for those occasions.
Become Familiar with Early Boarding Policies
If the plane has provisions for early boarding for those traveling with young children, take advantage of the time to board early and avoid the long lines you encounter when the rest of the passengers board the plane.
Pack Snacks
Children are going to get hungry during a trip, and the snacks available at the airport or on the plane may not be ones you want to give a young child. By bringing snacks from home you can control what your child eats in order to ensure he or she is still eating healthy snacks.
Bring Toys to Entertain the Child
Always make sure your child has something to do by bringing a couple of his favorite toys or buying some travel size games. For the comfort of other passengers choose toys that do not make noise.
Travel During Naptime
If you are traveling with a child that is able to sleep anywhere, try to schedule your travel during the time they will be sleeping. The trip will go much faster for the child if they can sleep during most of the travel time.
While traveling with a toddler may seem overwhelming at first, there is no reason to panic. Take your time and prepare yourself in advance and you’ll have a trip full of wonderful memories.
