A Sports Lover’s Guide to the Lake District
The Lake District is a picturesque and popular destination for many reasons and renting Lake District cottages is becoming more and more commonplace. There are hundreds of cottages for rent in the area – if you’re stuck for ideas, head to ukholidayplaces.co.uk as it’s really useful for tracking down UK accommodation.
If you’re a sports nut, you will have a whale of a time in the Lakes. There are so many different outdoor activities to choose from that you’ll wish you were staying much longer.
Gorge Walking
Gorge walking is great fun, taking you up steep sided becks, scrambling over rocks and following the paths of rivers. You might even climb up a waterfall or two! If the weather is fine enough, gorge walkers often enjoy a dip in the ‘jacuzzis’ they encounter en route but beware, this is not advisable on colder days! There are plenty of companies offering gorge walking experiences if you’re not sure where to start.
Canoeing
Canoes are so much fun and are much easier to propel forwards unlike heavier rowing boats. You’ll find you’ve mastered the art in no time and that the small nature of these boats will allow you to explore areas you wouldn’t have come across otherwise. Explore some of the beautiful lakes: Windermere, Wastwater, Ullswater and Coniston are just begging to be investigated by boat.
Kayaking
The difference between canoeing and kayaking is that kayaks have closed cockpits whereas canoes are open. Originally designed for travelling on the sea, the boat is entirely covered apart from a small hole into which the rider fits. You can have fun learning how to master the kayak on the calmer lake waters before heading to the rivers for more exploration.
Sailing
Have you always wanted to learn how to sail like a pro? There are hundreds of sailing centres and courses available in the Lake District so that you can master the sport in no time. It’s really quite simple to pick up the basics and dedicating half or a full day to it will build your confidence so that you can take on some single-handed sailing next time.
Raft-Building
Rafting is an extremely popular sport in the Lakes and there are plenty of centres that offer raft building experiences. The course requires a whole team to work together to build their very own raft out of barrels, wood and rope. After the design and build is complete, the team is then invited to test their raft on the water to see how it performs. It provides a great opportunity for a family or a group of friends to pull together and see what they can create as a team.
Climbing
If you’ve had enough of the water and want to try something on dry land, why not check out the climbing facilities near to where you’re staying? Strap on a harness and give it a try, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can achieve great things! Generally, outdoor climbing opportunities take place on rock faces of slate, granite and limestone. Introductory courses are widely available as well as more advanced options so choose according to your skill.
Whatever your sporting addictions, the Lake District is packed with activities and like-minded people with whom you can enjoy a drink with at the end of a rock-climbing, water-rafting, sailing, kayaking day.
