The Lowdown on Travel Insurance Credit Cards

Before taking a trip, purchasing a travel insurance policy may provide you with the peace of mind you need to enjoy yourself while on vacation. With travel insurance, you can rest assured that your relatively large financial investment will be protected. While many people deal with an insurance company and purchase a stand-alone travel insurance policy, others rely on the insurance policy that comes with their credit cards instead. Depending on the type of credit card that you have, your card may come equipped with a travel insurance policy.

Credit card travel insurance varies significantly from one case in the next. In most cases, you have to charge the entire trip to your credit card in order to get coverage. This means that the insurance will only apply to the items that you purchased with your card.

If you’re about to travel, you need to be aware of the terms and conditions of your credit card travel insurance before you go. This should involve a call to the credit card provider so that you can get any questions answered. For example, you need to find out if the travel insurance covers just the cardholder or if it provides coverage for anyone who is on the trip. In some cases, the coverage may be limited to you and your family.

In addition to finding out who is covered, you also need to find out when coverage begins. For instance, find out if the travel insurance coverage starts the moment you buy the trip on your card or if it starts at a certain date.

Once you find out when the coverage begins, you also need to find out what the coverage limit is. For example, the coverage limit may be the amount that you invested in the trip. In some situations, the travel insurance may provide accidental death and dismemberment coverage while you are traveling. Other credit card policies may only provide assistance with rental car damage or lost bags while you are traveling.

In addition to the basic coverage options that are provided with credit card travel insurance, you may also be able to add on additional coverage. By paying for additional riders or endorsements, the credit card company may be able to increase your coverage limit.

While credit card travel insurance does have some advantages, other travellers prefer to buy a standalone insurance policy before they travel. These types of policies are purchased from dedicated travel insurance companies instead of from credit card companies.

The primary reason that someone would want a standalone travel insurance policy is because it is more comprehensive. With a regular travel insurance policy, you can usually get much more coverage than you could from a credit card travel insurance policy. For example, you may get higher life insurance benefits as well as more areas of coverage. Most regular travel insurance policies provide some type of medical insurance while you are traveling, while many credit card travel insurance plans do not offer this service.

Although traditional travel insurance plans are more comprehensive, you may want to go strictly with your credit card travel insurance option. This is because you typically do not have to pay anything out of pocket for these benefits. In many cases, they are provided as a bonus to cardholders.

While you don’t have to pay anything directly for the credit card travel insurance, you do have to be concerned with some unexpected costs. For example, if you use your credit card to pay for the trip and you allow the balance to sit on your card for an extended period of time, you will have to pay money in interest. In some cases, the interest charges on your credit card balance may be more than what you would pay for a traditional travel insurance policy. Although the costs may be more, you may actually get fewer benefits. However, if you pay off the trip right away without allowing the balance to a proven interest, it may be well worth it to go with the credit card insurance option.

Regardless of which option you choose, be sure to talk to the provider to make sure that you understand the terms and conditions of the insurance policy. Otherwise, you might be in for a rude awakening while you are traveling.
