The Unbeaten Path – 5 UniquePlaces to Visit
If you long to get off the beaten path and visit places that offer a truly unique experience, there are still a few travel destinations that will provide you with something out of the ordinary. Here are five places that are well worth a visit.
1.Bhutan – This tiny astonishingly beautiful country, tucked away in the Himalayas between India and China, has been dubbed “the last Shangri-La”. Bhutan’s remote location has contributed to its mystique, as foreign tourists have only begun to discover the country. This peaceful Buddhist nation is a place where the traditional culture is still intact, and much of the population still lives as they did in medieval times. The flora and fauna in Bhutan’s alpine highlands and lowland forests is unmatched anywhere in the Himalayas.
2.The Blue Lagoon, Grindavik, Iceland – A visit to the Blue Lagoon Spa in “the Land of Fire and Ice” is an experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list. The stark beauty of the geothermal lagoon, surrounded by moss-covered lava fields, has an other-worldly quality. In the winter when the snow is falling the effect is magical. The mineral rich sea water is heated by the earth’s natural forces and hovers around 37-39°C / 98-102°F summer and winter. Voted as the best medical spa worldwide by the readers of “Conde Nast Traveller”, the Blue Lagoon is renowned for its healing properties.
3.Madagascar – Home to one of the richest ecosystems on earth, Madagascar is Africa’s best kept secret. The fourth largest island in the world, it sits in the Indian Ocean more than two hundred miles off the Eastern Coast of Africa. Madagascar’s remote location has fostered one-of-a-kind evolutionary developments and eighty percent of its native plant and wildlife are found nowhere else on earth. It is a tropical paradise with pristine white beaches overlooking turquoise waters, over thirty species of quirky lemurs and a fascinating culture.
4.Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Alberta, Canada – The ancient hunting grounds of the Blackfoot Indians is home to one of the largest and best preserved buffalo jumps in the world. The buffalo, which once roamed the vast plains of North America, were essential to the survival of the Plains Indian tribes for more than five millennia. They developed a unique method of bringing down the mighty beasts; they stampeded them off a cliff and processed the carcasses at their hunting camps nearby. Today, you can visit this unique UNESCO World Heritage Site, located less than a two hour drive south of Calgary, Alberta, camp in a genuine tipi, attend drumming and dancing ceremonies and immerse yourself in the Blackfoot culture.
5.Mosquito Bay, Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico – A visit to this bioluminescent lagoon on the Island of Vieques is a truly magical experience. At night the water appears to be lit by millions of stars glowing blue in the darkness. The stars are actually tiny single-cell organisms, Dinoflagellates, which emit a burst of bright blue-green light when they come into contact with another organism or are agitated. This amazing natural phenomenon occurs in other parts of the world, but nowhere else is there such a high concentration of these organisms.
Taking the unbeaten path often leads to places that will leave a lasting impression on your heart, mind and soul. On your next vacation, broaden your horizons and consider going somewhere truly unique.
