Travel Tips for Amazing Antalya, Turkey
The largest city in Southern Turkey, Antalya is considered the capital of the Turkish Riviera. A popular destination on Mediterranean cruises; it is one of the most beautiful cities on the Turkish Mediterranean coast.
Antalya has always been a desirable destination, and has been visited throughout the centuries by Paul the Apostle, Ibn Battuta and many other important historical figures. Antalya is rich in ancient history, and contains a beautifully preserved Roman-Ottoman quarter and some of the most impressive archaeological sites in the country. It is also becoming a modern centre, with luxurious resorts and spas and excellent restaurants.
When you find yourself in this beautiful part of the world, here are some helpful travel tips for Antalya, Turkey:
- The best time of the year to visit Antalya is in the spring season, around April. The weather will still be warm enough for sunbathing, but it will not be oppressively hot.
- History buffs should head straight to Kaleici, the old quarter of the city. It has beautifully preserved buildings lining narrow and winding cobblestone streets. Be sure to take a look at the Hadrianus Gate which was built in Roman times as an entrance arch to the city.
- While you are walking in Kaleici, wear shoes with sturdy soles and watch your step as the cobblestone streets can be uneven.
- The best places for shopping in Antalya are the three malls within the city: 5M Migros, Deepo Outlet Center, and Ozdilek.
- To get a great view of the city, climb up to the top of the Hill of Tunektepe. You can even dine at the revolving restaurant on the summit.
- There will be many boats moored in the harbour offering sightseeing tours along the Mediterranean coast. Assume that the first price offered you is about twice as expensive as it should be, so don’t be afraid to haggle.
- Be aware that antiques are forbidden to export from Turkey, and you could be charged hefty fines if you try to take them out of the country.
- If you ever have any trouble, it is good to know that Antalya has a special English-speaking section of their Police Department for travellers. If you lose your passport, are mugged, or need help, head to the offices at the marina below the old town.
- When you bring cash for shopping and buying food in Antalya, make sure that they are new bills without any rips in them. Some merchants in Turkey will refuse ripped or damaged paper bills.
- If you plan to visit a Turkish mosque while you are here, make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothing that is not too revealing. Men should not wear shorts either, or they will have to wear a long skirt overtop, provided at the door!
- Learn a few words of the Turkish language, such as Thank you and Hello. It is fun to give it a try, and the local people will appreciate it very much.
Have a great time exploring the beautiful city of Antalya!
