Ways To Save When You Travel

save on travel

Taking a vacation doesn’t have to break the bank. There are ways you can get away, without giving it all away.

Places that are just swarming with tourists when the weather is warm will very often offer big discounts when you visit during cooler months. The same goes for the places people frequent when it’s cold, like ski resorts. You can save money by going to those areas when the weather is warm. Traveling during the off-season is one sure-fire way to save money.

Another way to save money is to package things together. Book your airfare, lodging and transportation together. You can also save money by picking a destination to which you can drive or take a train. You can also save money by taking public transportation, or by biking or walking around the area.

You may also want to consider visiting local landmarks or tourist attractions that you haven’t seen yet. Avoid tourist trap souvenir shops and go exploring. Ask the locals what they enjoy about where they live. Find museums and galleries, and even libraries in the area that offer low- or no-cost activities.

Local and regional hotels may be willing to give you an extra night free or a discount. Don’t be afraid to negotiate; for a hotel owner, an unexpected vacancy is better filled with a freebie or a discount than nobody.

If you’re up for it, consider staying in a hostel. Hostels can run as little as $15 a night, or a little more for couples or families. Many of them offer a variety of amenities like kitchens and hot tubs, as well as activities for kids. They’re also very often located in strategic locations.

House swapping is a great way to get away. This will eliminate hotel bills and rental car bills, if you’re willing to swap cars.

Don’t forget to take advantage of credit card miles, frequent flier programs and other discounts through clubs and organizations you belong to, or even your employer.

One of the biggest expenses when traveling is meals. Bring along snacks, or go to a local grocery store and get granola bars, fresh fruit and snacks, as well as breakfast foods. Consider using only a hotel that offers a free breakfast. This will save you lots.

Here are some more ways you can save:

1. Make a travel budget and stick to it.

2. Rent an RV, boat or other water sport vehicle, instead of buying.

3. Make your reservations well in advance.

4. Take the bus or subway rather than a cab while you’re on vacation.

5. Don’t use the telephone in your hotel room; use the lobby pay phone.

6. Don’t use the hotel mini-bar. Bring your own snacks and drinks.

7. Don’t use room service. Go out to eat instead, choosing the local restaurants instead of the ones that cater to tourists.

8. Don’t shop at airport and hotel gift shops. You’ll pay more if you do.

9. Consider renting a cottage or condo instead of a hotel room. You’ll have a kitchen and can save money buy cooking your own meals.

10. Rent a smaller car. It costs more to rent the larger vehicles.
