What to See and Do in Liverpool
Liverpool – the home of two top class football teams, The Beatles, the Ferry across the Mersey, and the Liverbirds (who took their name from the bird on top of the ‘Liver’ building). But Liverpool has so much more than these. Whilst many visitors take a tour of one of the football stadiums, go on a “Beatles Experience” tour, or take the ferry across the river, they can easily miss out on some of the other attractions in this city.
The Arts
Art lovers won’t be disappointed in Liverpool. With the historic Walker Art Gallery as well as Tate Liverpool there is art to suit every taste. Theatre, dance and music fans will also always find something on to see.
History
History has played a big part in making Liverpool what it is today. Much of the city’s wealth came from trade, including the slave trade, and the International Slavery Museum is a great addition to Liverpool’s portfolio of museums. It is the only museum of its kind and covers the history of the slave trade as well as information about human rights issues worldwide. It can be a very moving experience to visit it. The docks were very important to the city and the Albert Dock is part of the World Heritage site. It is one of the most-visited areas of the city and full of restaurants, bars and hotels, as well as several museums and The Beatles Story attraction. Boat trips are also available from here.
Sport
Of course Liverpool and Everton football clubs are based in the city but horse-racing enthusiasts also flock to Liverpool, to Aintree, especially when the Grand National is on. But did you know that the British Grand Prix has also been held at Aintree? It’s unlikely to be held there again, but it illustrates the way this city has a sporting reputation.
Keeping the cost down
It is possible to buy a Liverpool 3 Day Minibreak card which offers discounts and free entry to many of the attractions in the city. If you are travelling with a group, then some places offer group discounts, and always ask about concession prices. There are so many things to do here that it is impossible to name them all. As always, tourist information centres will have loads of information.
Finally, don’t leave Liverpool without…
- taking a trip on the ferry across the Mersey
- getting something to eat at Albert Dock and doing some people watching
- visiting some of The Beatles sights
- seeing some live music
- taking a tour of one of the football grounds
- checking out the designer shops in The Cavern Walks
